This article was published more than 8 years ago. Some information in it may no longer be current. Michael Crichton, who died in , was always a readers' writer. The author of Jurassic Park , Rising Sun and The Andromeda Strain — among other bestsellers — and the creator of the television series ER had a knack for incorporating both complex scientific ideas and pressing psychosocial concerns into highly imaginative, tightly plotted thrillers that hooked the reader despite Crichton's workmanlike prose and limited attention to characterization.
Crichton's works might not have been good books, but they were good reads, a distinction often overlooked by critics, but not by readers, who made every Crichton novel of the past 20 years a blockbuster.
It would be nice to report that Micro , the second Crichton novel to be published since his death, was cut from the same cloth.
Sadly, Mi cro is neither a good book nor a good read. Completed by Richard Preston whose The Hot Zone was a harrowing, true-life bio-thriller from notes and early pages found among Crichton's papers, Micro follows a group of graduate students invited to Hawaii for potential careers at mysterious, highly classified Nanigen MicroTechnologies.
One of the students' brothers is a VP at Nanigen, and the day before the students are to leave, he dies mysteriously after sending a text to his brother reading, simply, "don't come. Of course the brother, Peter, goes to Hawaii, only to find that his brother's death wasn't an accident and that Vin Drake, the founder of Nanigen, may be involved. Not surprisingly, Drake doesn't respond well to those allegations, and Peter and his fellow students are summarily shrunk down to half an inch in size the mysterious research performed by Nanigen uses magnetic fields to shrink people and high-tech robots to tiny sizes and abandoned in a biological preserve to die.
The students must fight their way through a hostile world of insects and other predators and defeat Drake before their bodies start to implode from the micro-bends, the fatal side-effect of remaining too small for too long.
To be perfectly frank, writing the above summary was painful: The plot of Micro is so obvious, anyone could predict what is going to happen without any need to read it. It's worse than that, though. Micro could actually harm the regard in which readers hold Crichton. Corporate espionage, dark conspiracies, evil industrialists, survival of a small group in a foreign land of large predators. It's as though every Crichton trope has been mashed up and regurgitated for Micro , stripped of its originality and making the result read almost as a parody of his previous books.
Remember the thrill of Jurassic Park? Substituting beetles for velociraptors reads as send-up, and there's nothing thrilling about it. Stripped of Crichton's usual strengths originality, imagination , his weaknesses stand out in sharp relief. The characterization in Micro is subpar by even Crichton's standards. The students are barely differentiated from one another if the reader doesn't care when a main character dies, that's a significant flaw in the writing , and the villain lacks any motivation whatsoever, to the point that I expected him to twirl his mustache at any moment.
The writing itself is clumsy, with descriptions repeated verbatim so frequently I wondered if I was reading a first draft. There's no need to belabour the point: Micro is a sorry note on which to close out the career of one of our great popular storytellers. Robert J.
