I like Poirot as he was in the earlier series. I offer a resounding yes! This mystery is a bit more bizarre than the typical Hercule poirot season 12 cozy. Save your money and buy this over a ticket to the new "Murder on the Orient Express" movie. For trust me when I say this is by far the superior depiction of Poirot.

So yeah this is well worth what Amazon will charge you to rent or own this. Orient Express is, of course, a classic--and agruably Christie's finest Poirot adventure. And though I find merit in most of the reviews, I would like to offer some counter-points. Yes, Suchet's Poirot does seem to have lost some of his playfulness and charm as compared to the earlier seasons. However, I find Suchet's portrayal in this story to be very consistent with what and how an aging Poirot might actually be.

By this point in his life, it follows logically that Poirot is undoubtedly fatigued--worn down by the years and the countless horrors he has witnessed in his amazing yet tragedy-filled life.

Was he as much fun as the earlier portrayals of Poirot by Suchet in this series? Absolutely not. Was he real? I offer a resounding yes! I loved seeing him anguish over his decision at the end.

I genuinely believed and felt he was wrestling with an intense moral dilemma: should he do what was legally right or what was morally appropriate? Poirot was a former policeman, remember. He had served the law all of his life and deeply believed in it--as Suchet so convincingly reminded us in this film. To abandon the law, then, was--for Poirot in this film--perhaps the most difficult thing he had ever been asked to do.

Yet, deep down inside, he knew. He knew what he must do. And he followed his heart instead of his treasured grey cells--but not without paying a faith-shaking, heart-wrenching price as subtly yet exquisitely conveyed by Suchet's face at the very end.

Was this version of Orient Express as true to the Christie version as, say, the Finney version? Were the characters strictly two-dimensional as Christie's usually were out of necessity, since you never knew who was going to die and who did it?

Was this version real, dramatic, intense, riveting and deeply moving? I found myself genuinely caring about these characters, and the acting, directing and production values were simply extraordinary. At times, for instance, I actually found myself shivering right along with the Poirot! It may not have been vintage and classic Christie, true, but this version of Orient is and always will be in my opinion an excellent cinematic experience. Even if you have seen the other versions, see this one, too--but do not compare it.

Just bundle up, brace yourself, and enjoy and savor it. It is, in a word, transcendent. All these are major Agatha Christie novels starring her famous detective Hercule Poirot. David Suchet is incomparable as Poirot. I have seen productions with other actors playing Poirot and none of them bring him to life for me the way Suchet does. I also have read all her work and Suchet is remarkable in bringing this character to life. As to the particular televised mysteries in Season 12, I can say that all were good although "The Clocks" was my least favorite.

Murder on the Orient Express is the most famous of these and it is brought to the screen beautifully, very dark though. If you have read Christie then you will find these mandatory viewing. I have been following the whole series and rarely do I have a serious disagreement with how they are brought to the screen although that also means liberties are occasionally taken.

Christie fans will enjoy though if only for the joy of watching the brilliant David Suchet. This is by far the best movie version of this story. It takes an interesting story with two dimensional characters and gives us depth and very human motivations, with excellent acting, that make the story moving amd relatable. Did I say excellent percormances. Suchet has never been better.

I use this film in my UG philosophy of law class on the topic of justice. I must say I agree with all the other viewers who dislike this adaptation. It is not how Agatha Christie envisioned it in her novel and I did not care for the dark, brooding Poirot in this production. David Suchet is my favorite Poirot but I prefer the Albert Finney version of Murder on the Orient Express because at least the Poirot in that production is not angry and dark.

I love a sense of comedic release added to murder mysteries because it lessens the tension at the right times but there was no comedy in this at all. I would rather see Poirot as the ingenious character that he is instead of this dark man he is portrayed as here. I wonder how Suchet felt with such a production? The four episodes are exquisitely filmed, full of atmosphere. This version of 'The Orient Express' surpasses those I've watched before, it's simply stunning and heartbreaking for Poirot, an angle of the story I hadn't thought about before.

An emotional roller coaster for the aging Poirot. Well worth watching and well worth celebrating as we watch Poirot beginning to reveal his age, but the little grey cells are still sparking I was so looking forward to watching this, as I consider David Suchet's portrayal of Christie's diminutive detective a tour-de-force par excellence. However, this Poirot was cranky, glum, glowering and dogmatic with none of the flashes of puckish humor that contributed so much to the series in the past.

I realize the storyline does not lend itself to a light touch, but in contrast to this version, the big budget version and Albert Finney's portrayal now seems more true to Dame Agatha's vision of Poirot, something I never thought I'd say. Even so, the story itself is a classic and worth watching, especially for someone not familiar with the plot line.

I doubt I'll buy the series, however. I like Poirot as he was in the earlier series. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Having had all the other earlier seasons in a box set I bought this to complete the DVD series that are available.

A Fine season 12 although I miss the intimate hour long format of the early series. Although most people will know the story of Murder on The Orient Express backwards and that makes that episode drag as it feels overly long.
