Devoid of character and completely sapped souls without a hint of personality nor anything worth talking about. The actual production of the film isn't too bad, it's obviously fairly cheaply made but nonetheless Nicolas Roeg works around that admirably. In terms of the film, other than the bad acting which plagued the film to the point of a painful experience, there is a dirty, muddy beauty to Roeg's film. In a way it is he that makes this film completely different to Apocalypse Now.
It turns out he tries his hardest but there's a sorely lacking level of intensity, or energy for that matter and ultimately ends up being, unfortunately, a rather boring film. This film gets 5. I don't get it. While it is no Apocalypse Now it is by no means a bad film. In fact one of the best thing about it is that it does not try to be Apocalypse Now. There is no way a TV film will ever match that greatness so instead Roeg tries to capture the original story. Not only does he not update it to present day conflicts, he even tries to capture the spirit of the book.
This is set farther back in history and the story telling is very much in harmony with that fact. You feel like you are reading a book from the turn…. Review by Craig J. Any worries I had that this was going to be a straightforward adaptation of Joseph Conrad's novel were laid to rest by the blink-and-you'll-miss-'em flash-forwards Roeg starts sprinkling in early in the narrative.
I was quite taken with the brief shot of a mummified man and eagerly awaited his return appearance. I also took special notice of the hooded figure that starts shadowing Marlow's expedition up the Congo to find the elusive Kurtz on behalf of the unnamed ivory-trading company that employs them both. And I appreciated the reunion of Roeg and actor James Fox who plays one of the company's middle managers a quarter century after they filmed Performance. Slow and restrained in its pacing and acting of its two stars.
Roeg creates a faithful adaptation getting the thick atmosphere on the page to the screen. His style definitely comes through at times, in this, his last film, with his disjointed editing, some nice framing and a few beautiful shots of the sun.
Typical with adaptations the film loses much of the metaphor, symbolism and nuance of the novel. Skip it unless you absolutely have to see John Malkovich act with a monkey on his shoulders. You'd think Tim Roth and John Malkovich in a Nicolas Roeg film based on such a dark story would make for an amazing experience.
Don't bother, though, because there's something holding this entire film back and it's more than likely the fact that it was made for television which seems to often be a pit of death for creativity. A perfectly capable adaptation of the Conrad book, with decent production values, a strong cast and the odd flourish which reminds you of when Roeg was one of the best directors in the world.
However, the problem is that Apocalypse Now is already a terrific film version of Heart of Darkness and this feels like a backwards step, especially as both Roth and Malkovich basically do shadow versions of Sheen and Brando. Both are terrific actors in their own right but the nature of the material gives them little to do beyond renactment. Very different from Apocalypse Now in its grimy beauty, and very well worth the watch in its own right. Good, but somewhat too literate adaptation of Joseph Conrad's novel is nevertheless visually imaginative and features competent performances by Roth and Malkovich.
The novel being one of my favourites, i was expecting way more out of this, but they could've done things worse too. The atmosphere and the score were good, but i hated that they cut down some of the most horrorific scenes from the book like Marlow stumbling on a group of dead and dying indigenous people in the forest , and they had to add a bunch of non-existant scenes between Kurtz and Marlow just to let "Malkovich shine" i guess, with a bunch of lines that make little sense and obviously aren't on the level of Conrad's prose.
Kinda funny how Kurtz' illness has to drastically worse in like a minute for him to die as a consequence. Worth checking out. Roeg up to his usual tricks with structure and time; awesome stacked cast- Ian McDiarmid and Peter Vaughn in small character roles among the veritable rogues gallery.
